September, 2011, Tucson, Arizona, USA. The Biosphere 2 is an artificial construction, made of glass, steel, concrete, stones, soil, water, all the plants which have been planted inside and a huge sum of money. According to the idea it is a closed environmental system, made for an experimental purpose to model how humans can establish the living conditions on foreign planets. The exhibition brings us across different biomes: deserts, grasslands, rainforests, oceans, the surface of the planet Mars, but also allows taking a look on what kind of research is done actually in the buildings. Cacti and other succulents were in a good condition inside. Nevertheless, they felt themselves better outside. In the neighbourhood, the Saguaro National Park consists of two major part, around the city of Tucson. The aim of the National Park is the protection of saguaros (Carnegiea gigantea). The visitors’ centre is located in the Eastern part. Saguaros can be found everywhere, in every size. They germinate and develop in their first few decades in the protection of bushes. Over fifty years, they are still surrounded by bushes but the stem is 2-3 m higher that those one. Nevertheless, bushes slowly aging, the growing giant takes all the water and nutrients, thus the bushes get disappear. At age of 100 they are around 8 m high, at age of 150, they can reach the size of 15 m. They can flower usually from age of 30. Crested individuals are very rare, one from 250,000 specimens in average.
