Echinocereus coccineus originates from the South-West deserts of the USA. As a widely dispersed species, it is very variable in its characters. The author got his two plants in 2002 which he planted into his rock garden. He never waters the rock garden in the summer, and do not protect it in the wintertime. The plant flowered for the first in 2005. By 2010, the two specimens grew close to each other thus seem to be a sole specimen. In 2011, a lot of buds developed on the cluster, but the weather was rainy thus the flowers hardly opened. But in 2012, the cluster developed even more flowers: altogether there were 60 flowers opened in the same time. The total flowering period is about 2–4 weeks, but the single flowers are only lasting for a few days.
